Music at Living Waters

The music program at Living Waters Christian Academy follows the Alberta Program of Studies with an emphasis on music as a gift from God and a means of expressing our praise back to Him.

The first level of the program starts at kindergarten and continues through grade 5. Students are taught through singing, movement, listening, and rhythm. They learn theory, singing in melody and harmony, and how to play rhythmic instruments. The grade 1 to grade 5 students prepare for a Christmas concert and a spring concert each year – they present a musical which includes an all-elementary choir and acting.

Students in grade 4 and grade 5 are introduced to the recorder and learn how to play the notes, proper breathing technique, and how to read music. This helps prepare them for the band program which starts in grade 6.

The Band program begins in grade 6. Students have the choice to play one of the introductory woodwind or brass instruments: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, and trombone (with a potential to play percussion). Students attend the Jump Start session at Alberta College in Edmonton to get a “jump start” on their instrument from professional musicians.

Students continue on in the band program through to grade 9. They perform at the Christmas and spring concerts. Students attend events such as the ACSI Musicale retreat which is a two-day overnight trip where students get the opportunity to meet with other Christian band students from western Canada and perform together, as well as be adjudicated by professional clinicians.

There is the opportunity for students to continue playing in Senior High (grades 10-12) in Instrumental Music 10, Instrumental Music 20, and Instrumental Music 30. These bands also perform at school functions/concerts.

We have an extracurricular jazz band which will allow interested students to explore other types of music, with a jazz, rock, swing, and latin emphasis. This band will also perform at in-school and out-of-school functions.

Students passionate about worship have the opportunity to lead their peers during Chapel. Student led worship teams are for students in Jr/Sr High who would like to minister to their fellow students through leading worship – either through playing an instrument, singing, or both.
